Mt Amos at Freycinet – SAT. 27TH FEBRUARY 2021
Mt Amos is one of the spectacular Hazards
peaks at Tasmania's beautiful and world-renowned Freycinet National
Park. The walk offers spectacular views to Wineglass Bay and beyond.
Bring a camera! One website describes the walk as "short, demanding and
extremely entertaining." Hopefully, the entertainment will come from the
good company you might expect on this walk. There are some steep and
somewhat slippery rock faces to traverse, but reasonably fit walkers,
including energetic but not very small children, should be able to
manage. Please note that if bringing a car,
you will need a valid
Parks Tasmania pass.
Walk Route:
From the Wineglass Bay car park, the track
heads east, rising gently over 1 km before turning generally south and
climbing much more steeply up a rocky ridge. Care is needed to follow
the route, which passes up some large granite rock faces which can be
very slippery when wet. 300 metres altitude is gained over the next 1
km, with spectacular views most of the way up. The final approach levels
out somewhat, to reach the summit of Mt. Amos, 454 metres, 2.3 km walk
from car park. The views are considered the best in the Freycinet area,
and well worth the effort!
Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk,
please phone your walk leader, Miranda Gracie, ph. 0458 175 703 to
book in. The departure time is 8:00 am from the Door of
Hope Church car park, Launceston. If you would like to arrange to meet
the group elsewhere, please arrange with the leader, and please
be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of the listed time. The
leader should always be notified of any other people you intend to bring
along, and you should always contact the walk leader if intending to
participate in a particular Boots N' All walk.
To access this area from northern
Tasmania: From Launceston, follow the southern outlet and
Midland Highway for 70 km to Campbell Town and continue across the Red
Bridge to the junction of the Lake Leake Highway (B34) near the southern
outskirts of the town. Turn left and follow B34 for 60 km right through
to the Tasman Highway (A3) junction. Turn left and head north and then
north-east along the Tasman Highway 22 km to reach the Coles Bay Road
(C302). Follow Coles Bay Rd for 26 km to reach Coles Bay, and continue
through to the Freycinet car park, a further 5 km. Total distance 180
km, and allow 2 hours 10 minutes drive time.
