Mt Arnon
Sunday afternoon
2nd March 2025

Most likely, even if you have lived in Launceston for years, you won’t have heard of Mt. Arnon. It’s on farmland, about 6 km SW of Prospect, and accessed from Pateena Rd. Being a little higher than the surrounding country, it will offer espansive views of the Hadspen, Longford and northern midlands areas, but Launceston is hidden behind hills in between.
Walk Notes:
The walk starts at a driveway and gate at Pateena Rd, and follows east, and then southeast, across the Strathroy property. Walking is gently uphill at first, but then a fairly steep rise to gain 100m altitude over the final km to reach Mt. Arnon, altitude 300m. Distance is about 1.5 km each way, and it should take less than an hour each way. It is not a tracked walk, so very small children may need carrier options. Energetic children should cope well.

Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Dan Hutchison on 0457 765 907 to book in.
While we don’t usually mind if people just turn up for these Sunday afternoon Walk this Way walks, for this one, because of the less familiar starting point, it will be very helpful for the walk leader if you could let him know you are coming, so that the walk doesn’t set off without you.
If you need transport, please discuss with the leader, who may be able to connect you with someone attending from your area. Please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of the listed time. It is also courtesy to let the leader know if you have changed plans and are no longer coming.
Getting There:
Follow Wellington St. south and merge right to Midland Hwy 1. Continue uphill for just over 2 km to the Bass Highway exit on left, following through the exit to the Bass Highway (still 1) and continue west for 4.5km, taking the exit on left to Pateena Rd. Take the 2nd exit from the roundabout on to Pateena Rd, and follow south along Pateena Rd C531 for 2 km. The Strathroy property and gate are on the left side. The walk starts from there. Please be at the meeting place by 2 pm.
It is, of course, possible to approach the start of the walk following Pateena Rd from near Longford, and Pateena Rd can also be reached from the NW but this would require approach via the Meander Valley Rd past Hadspen.
Other Information:
These Sunday afternoon walks do not require the level of preparation and equipment needed for wilderness walks. Dress comfortably and sensibly, and remember that even over a 2 hour period, weather can be changeable in northern Tasmania, so it’s always a great idea to have a warm top and a raincoat in your backpack, along with a drink and perhaps a snack.
For this particular walk, reasonably solid sneakers should be worn, or walking boots if you have them. Open toe shoes and sandals would NOT be a good choice.
Yes, we know… Parents of very young children often have to carry a lot more, including children in backpacks! Hopefully your fellow walkers will offer to share the burden! Being off-track through farmland and open bushland, it is recommended to wear trousers or gaiters to avoid getting cuts or grass seeds.
