Vivienne has sent the following information about this Saturday’s walk to Mt. Arthur. Hope to see you there. Weather forecast is promising at this stage.

The electronic track substantially follows the track Vivienne is planning to use (I hope I have this right…), except that the old track (if it’s the one I remember) goes up past the former Grammar Outdoor Ed. camp, now a private residence. It is slightly shorter than the “official” track, but probably a tad steeper!

Where are we going? Mt Arthur
What to expect: Your leader has been up 4 times in the last 5 weeks (yes even in storms)…… so you can expect leeches, wet feet (the upper section of track last Sunday was a running river, small section of boulders which are slippery, wet rocks to climb up in sections, and very exposed once on top. As most of the walk is through a pretty, but moist forest (no idea what the trees are) you are under a canopy, so if it is wet you are not getting the full force of the weather until you hit the top – in the last 4 walks I have made it to the old fire lookout hut once and no further due to weather – so hoping to make it to the top if a fine day.
The Track: I have chosen the old track as it is much prettier and interesting in comparison to the new one. This crosses over two sections of private land, we have permission by the owners for locals and those in the know, to continue to walk this track. They do upkeep on it although each time I have been up, I have had to clear branches from the previous week and in some cases clear branches that have come down during the walk as I was coming back out. (Small twigs and limbs nothing major). I have marked the track really well so no likelihood of anyone getting lost as far as the fire hut – the top is not marked so if a beautiful day, I will be leading by memory across the plateau to the top of Mt Arthur – this can be through low scrub on a not well used track as most people go to view the huts. We can also do a side trip along the boardwalk to the new fire hut on the eastern side if weather permits.
So lets all pray for some fine weather so we can have a spectacular view of Launceston, the Tamar and the surroundings
