You are invited to attend the Boots N’ All walk to Mts. Charter and Cripps on Sat. 9th November 2013. These are two relatively short wilderness walks in the to the west of the Cradle Mt. area. Mt. Cripps affords excellent views towards Cradle Mt. and the western part of the state as well as vistas to the north.

The departure time is 7:30am from the Door of Hope Church car park, Launceston. Suggested meeting places if coming from elsewhere could be Sheffield at Claude Rd. turnoff at 8:15 am, Moina at 8:30 am or the Cradle Mt. Link Rd (marked on some maps as Belvoir Rd.) – Murchison Hwy junction at 8:45 am. (approximate times only). However, you still need to contact the walk leader, Basil Tkaczuk, per details above if intending to walk. The leader should be notified of any other people you intend to bring along.
You should always contact the walk leader if intending to participate in a particular Boots N’ All walk.
Walk route:
Mt. Charter is approx. 6 km south of the Cradle Mt. Rd – Murchison Hwy junction and is less than 2 km walking along a mining access road with 150 metres gain in altitude. Views from the top are very limited due to forest, and it is included mainly because it is a peakbagger point (see below). Depending on road conditions and gate access, it may be possible to do a 4WD shuttle!
Mt. Cripps is accessed from a point approx. 6 km east of the Cradle Mt. Rd – Murchison Hwy junction. Approx. 3 km down old forestry roads, the walk begins through a band of trees and on to open buttongrass and knee-height scrub with a short band of higher scrub at the true summit. Walk distance is about 1.5 km to summit, with 200 metres altitude gain.
To access this area from northern Tasmania: Roads to Cradle Mt. are well signposted, and the area can be accessed from several directions. From Sheffield, go south along Claude Rd through Gowrie Park and westward down into the Forth Valley (now Cethana Rd.), continuing up the other side to Moina. Turn south into Cradle Mt. Rd. Approx. 45 km will bring you to the aforementioned junction of Cradle Mt. Link Rd (marked on some maps as Belvoir Rd.) with the Murchison Highway.
Warnings:
I’ll mention in passing that the Barn Bluff attempt on Sat. 9th November was abandoned approximately half way in due to an injury. The walk leader wisely decided it was in the best interests of the injured walker for the group to accompany them back to the start point. Please be aware that safety of walkers is of the highest priority, and on occasions, it will be necessary to accept a change of plan during a walk.
