You are invited to attend the Boots N’ All walk to Mother Cummings’ Peak on Sat. 28th December. You will immediately notice that this is NOT the advertised walk to Jillett’s Tier. This is because the dam at Lagoon of Islands was removed during the year, and access to the lake foreshore has been restricted due to rehabilitation work.
Mother Cummings’ Peak is a prominence near Meander with panoramic views across the northern region. The walk includes a pretty alpine valley with cushion plants, and hopefully scoparia and other vegetation in full flower!
Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone me, Basil Tkaczuk on 6331 1155 to book in.
The departure time is 8:00am from Door of Hope car park. The alternative meeting place is the start of Mole Creek road at roundabout at western exit of Deloraine at 8:30 am. However, you still need to contact the walk leader, Basil Tkaczuk, per details above if intending to walk. The leader should be notified of any other people you intend to bring along.
You should always contact the walk leader if intending to participate in a particular Boots N’ All walk.
Walk route:
The primary aim of the walk is to reach the northern peak – height 1190 m – approximately 3 km each way from cars. After about 800 metres of fairly gentle grades, the track rises very steeply, with 300 metres altitude gained over the next 800 metres. Another 200 metres altitude is gained over the final 1 km to reach the northern summit, which is NOT the peak-bagger point. If the day is pleasant and by agreement, it may be possible for some of the party to branch out to the southern (peak-bagger) peak, while others enjoy a leisurely soujourn in the alpine valley. The southern summit is reached about 1.5 km beyond the alpine valley, at 1260 m, but requires a descent to the 1060 m contour on the way.
To access the walk from Launceston, proceed along the Bass Highway to Deloraine (about 51 km), but do not turn off at the eastern exit into Deloraine. Instead, continue across Meander R. and up hill to the western exit, and to the roundabout at start of Mole Creek Rd. Continue on Mole Creek Rd. about 8 km and turn left into Dairy Plains Rd. Go all the way through Dairy Plains Rd. (several right hand turns and 2 junctions where you need to follow the signs). When you arrive at the T junction with Western Creek Rd, turn right and 800m further on, turn left up Westrope Rd. Go more or less straight for 5 km south, and this will bring you to the restored bridge across Western Creek. Continue on Westrope Rd past the Western Creek track, past Syd’s Track, and approx. 6 km further, you will be at the start of the Mother Cummings track.
Westrope Rd. is all gravel. There is about 1 km of somewhat rough and degraded road as you approach Western Creek crossing, which will be fine for 4WD and “softroader” vehicles. 2WD vehicles with reasonable clearance should be able to get through with little difficulty. Past Western Creek, the road is in quite good condition.
Warnings:
S (very) Steep incline for at least part of the way. If you find tracks such as the zig-zag track from Penny Royal at King’s Bridge Launceston too challenging, this is not a walk for you.
E Exposed alpine conditions – can be dangerous in poor weather if not fully equipped
B Boulder field – walkers need to be able to confidently step from rock to rock. (mainly if attempting southern peak)
C Climbing sections using rocks and vegetation as hand holds. (mainly if attempting southern peak)
If you are unsure of equipment requirements, Visit the Boots N’ All section of the sutas.org.au website per link below and read “Clothing suggestions for exposed conditions”
